The National Weather Service in Jacksonville issued a Rip Current Statement at 9:23 a.m. EST on Wednesday, Nov. 4, for the coastal zones of Nassau, Flagler and St. Johns counties in Florida. The statement says dangerous rip currents are expected through late Wednesday night.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water, the statement says.

What to do if caught in a rip current

  • Swim near a lifeguard.
  • If caught, relax and float. Do not swim against the current.
  • If you are able, swim in a direction that follows the shoreline.
  • If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
